Taking my inspiration from crochet cords, which are used as a basis for needle lace, I discovered through experimentation that you can use the technique to construct vessels, bags jewellery and many other fascinating textile forms.

Touchstones Rochdale hosted the ‘Big Microbe Knit’ as part of the Manchester Science Festival on 31st October 2009. Participants could knit ‘microbes including Salmonella, Cholera, Tuberculosis, Penicillin. I thought it would be fun to try crocheting these microbes using the amigurumi crochet technique. One of the participants on the day had brought along his version of MRSA. Inspired by his crocheting I interpreted it using amigurumi. Here are the results of a day of crocheting at the Big Microbe Knit:
